Weak sunlight shimmered down through the leaves and branches of the apprentices' den, hitting and glimmering upon the back of a mound of tortoiseshell fur. The ray of light shone on the cat's pelt and made it dance with brightness for a few moments, before the body uncurled and the cat rolled into a sitting position.
Sorrelpaw opened her haws and stretched them wide in a yawn, showing off pink gums and sharp white teeth. She fluffed out her thick tortoiseshell-and-white fur and flicked her ears, trying to drive out the chill. Licking her nose and blinking lazily, the apprentice wondered what she'd be doing today. Not training, that was for sure, not after her mentor, and uncle, Webclaw, had been blinded. She sighed, stretching out her paws in front of to scratch at the dust. She arched her spine then straightened again, lithe body full of energy. She peered around the den, wondering if she was the first to awaken.

Starrypaw walked over to the apprentice's den, carrying two pieces of prey. One rabbit, and one mouse. Once in the den, Starrypaw set down the two pieces of prey gently. "Good Morning, Sorrelpaw," she meowed sweetly. Starrypaw picked up her orange paw and licked it twice, and wiped it across her sotf face. After setting it back to the ground, she rapped her small tail around her paw. SHe streached it as far as it could go, but it only reached arcoss the one paw. "Would you like something to eat?" she gestured toward the rabbit and mouse sitting between them.

Sorrelpaw looked at the other apprentice, roused from her musing. She smiled at Starrypaw, then flicked her tail in greeting. "Yes, thankyou," she mewed, taking the moue and dipping her head in polite thanks. She ate quickly, but neatly, then swallowed the last mouthful with a soft, rumbling purr. She thn licked a paw and drew it over her face, mewing: "I wish Echostar would appoint me a new mentor," she mewed, with a slight wistful note in her voice.

Starrypaw nodded to Sorrelpaw's thanks. She too started to eat. Slowly she ate the rabbit that was in front of her. After all of the prey had been eaten, she licked her lips and looked up at Sorrelpaw when she started to talk. 'Yes, I hope he does appoint you a new mentor. I never got a mentor, maybe we'll get mentor together?" Starrypaw purred, hoping she too would be able to get a mentor soon. She was ready to become a warrior as soon as possible.

Sorrelpaw smiled at the other apprentice, glad to know she wasn't the only one without a mentor. She licked her nose with a stretch, then mewed. "Want to go hunting?" The tortoiseshell began to groom her ruffled pelt as she waited for Starrypaw to answer. She pulled the last scrap of moss from her fur, then looked up with her blue eyes shimmering.

Starrypaw smiled. No one really invited her to do much expect the elder. Her eyes sparkled. "I'd love to! But you see, I'm not sure how to hunt. Since I never got a mentor, no one has taught me how to hunt yet,.." Starrypaw meowed, looking down at her paws.

"Hm," mewed Sorrelpaw thoughtfully, licking one paw. "There is that small problem." She sighed, lying down again with her head on her paws. "Until Echostar appoints us mentors, there's nothing we can do except look after the elders," she complained, scratching at the earth with her claws.

Starrypaw laughed and stood up. "You know, the elder's aren't that bad. I'm going to go talk with Echostar about getting mentors for us." And with that, Starrypaw headed off the Echostar's den.

Sorrelpaw smiled at the other aprentice's joke, but she was feeling too down-hearted to laugh. When Starrypaw suggested talking to Echostar, she brightened a little, her tail swishing from side to side. "OK," She padded after her new friend, hoping Echotar wouldn't be angry at the apprentices' proposition.

Starrypaw walked into the den. She was still downhearted about not getting a mentor, but had to be strong for her friend Sorrelpaw. The orange she-cat walked over to a pile of moss and layed down on it, looked over to where her friend would be.

Sorrelpaw entered after Starrypaw, and glanched guiltily at her friend. She still felt bad for having been appointed a mentor, and not Starrypaw. She blinked apolegetically at the ginger apprentice, then curled up on her bedding, feeling uncomfortable under Starrypaw's gaze.

"What now?" she asked softly. The two really couldn't do much together until she got her mentor. She closed her eyes slowly, letting ehr ginger fur lay flat and her mind be at ease.

"I'm not doing anything until you are appointed a mentor," replied Sorrelpaw stubbornly. She had wanted her and Starrypaw to be apprenticed together, so they could hunt together, train together, perhaps, and maybe even be made warriors together... Starrypaw was the first real friend the small tortoiseshell had had in her life, and she found her company as pleasurable as she had fround her dead brothers'. She still missed them with all of her large heart, and hoped that they rested peacefully in StarClan.

"Don't say that!" Starrypaw meowed fiercly. "It won't do either of us any good if you don't start training. I'll get my mentor in good time, but you need to start training so you can become a warrior!" The ginger apprentice looked staright toward her friend, right into her eyes.

Brightflame trotted happily toward the apprentices den. She smiled and stepped in. Her heart was racing. "Starrypaw?" she mewed. She spotted her sitting with Sorrelpaw. "Starrypaw guess what?! I was talking to Echostar, and he said that I could be your mentor!" Brightflame danced from paw to paw.
