Walnutclaw ran smoothly up to the Tall Hill. His muscles flexed smoothly under his coat and his eyes watched for any signs of life. All was still in the early morning and Walnutclaw twitched his ears this way and that. Prey was not the only thing he watched for. Other dangerous cats may be lurking nearby and that was the last thing he needed when training his first apprentice. Yes, he finally could be truly a warrior. Having an apprentice was a great honor and Walnutclaw was sure it would never happeen though, he didn't know why. Anyway, he would pass on everything he knew possible to Sorrelpaw. He would train her in battle and how to hunt. How to comb the land for inturders. It would all happen, yes it would.

The delicae tortoiseshell-and-white shape of Sorrelpaw hurtled down the hill, bright blue eyes tracking Walnutclaw. The brown smudge seemd very far away. With a grunt of weariness, Sorrelpaw increased her pace, reaching her mentor's side after a few long, painful minutes. She slowed to a trot beside him, gasping for breath. Hopefully he wouldn't go running off like that again. She shot him a sulky lookl before loping after him.

Walnutclaw turned to grin at Sorrelpaw. "You know, you might want to have a run up here more often."He smiled again before launching into his quick speech,"Today you will learn how to hunt rabbits. Rabbits rely on hearing to sense predators so you most be super careful when hunting these animals. Hold you tail straight for balance, not up, but straight forward. Also take turns eyeing your prey and the ground you're stepping on, because stepping on a twig could startle it and away it goes. The only chance you have of catching a rabbit running is when you know where its burrow is and can head it off and let it get tired without you getting exhausted. Now here is an example:" Walnutclaw paused and lifted his nose to the wind. The smell of an older male came to him. The old male was so engrossed in smelling a pile of dung from another rabbit, that it never noticed the cat stalking it. Walnutclaw lept over three foxlengths and landed perfectly. He turned to Sorrelpaw with the rabbit, and buried it. "Now your go...."He indicated the wide open fields."Let your senses take over. Listen, see, smell for the rabbit."

Sorrelpaw, forgetting her grumpiness, pricked her ears to listen to what her mentor had to say. She nodded vigourusly at the end of each sentence he spoke, and after his example she blinked. "That was awesome!" she mewed. She dropped into a hunter's crouch, rear dancing in the air, before he remembered she was supposed to be catching a rabbit for herself. She lifted her delicate muzzle, sniffing long and hard. Then she dropped her head, and began to prowl along the grass, keeping flat to the earth with her tail straight. She spotted a young rabbit with an injured leg, hopping along slowly, looking disorientated. Sorrelpaw gave into her eagerness and rushed forwards, but as she leapt the rabbit slipped out of her paws and she landed face-first in the grass. She got to her paws, seething. "Stupid thing!" she hissed.

Walnutclaw smiled and his whiskers twitched."Er, well ahem. When you go after a rabbit, the last thing you want to do is let your prey-hungry instincts take over, because then you become careless. If you practice like, perhaps every day, simply walking through camp, just practice walking silently so that when you are hunting, it comes almost natural to you."He indicated where she had fallen."When you hunt rabbits always keep in mind that you must keep a calm head. You will never be a successful warrior if you can't hold yourself back. Now try it again and remember to make absolutely positively sure that you can catch that rabbit."

Sorrelpaw pricked up her tawny ears to listen, her brow furrowng. She flinched at her mentor's comment about never being a warrior and hissed: "Just watch me!" The pretty tortoiseshell fell into a skillful crouch, tail straight. She stalked through the grass, which tickled her nose though she held back a sneeze. She stayed like this until a rabbit caught her eye and nose, at which tim she streaked silently towards it, slowing down as she neared the fat creature, It wriggled its white fluffy tail as she approachd, oblivious. Sorrelpaw crept closer, then leapt. The rabbit's head shot up and it bunched its lgs to bolt, but Sorrelpaw crashed down on top of it and sank in her teeth. The rabbit crumpled, lifeless. Sorrelpaw dragged her catch bck to her mentor, dropping at his paws before skipping happily in a little circle. "See?" she purred.

Walnutclaw purred. "I stand corrected! Well done!" He reached over and licked her on the forehead before saying, "Well, now that we know what a skilled warrior you are, why don't we show the elders? Let's hunt here for awhile before heading back to camp. Bet you I can catch more!" He walked away, tail rigid as he stalked a young rabbit that was bus borrowing a hole. He raised a paw and brought it down, "CRACK!" A loud twig snapped and off the rabbit went. Hissing he took off. Flat out he cut a different direction, to the rabbit burrow. Almost......lungs pumping.....there! He launched at the rabbit but it scrabbled to the side and dived into the hole. Walnutclaw glared at the hole, and looked back up hoping that Sorrelpaw hadn't seen. That would be rather embarrassing..

Sorrelpaw grinned at her mentor's praise. "Yeah, I bet I can too!" she mewed, her confidence boosted by her success. She raced off before Walnutclaw took off after the rabbit, even her sharp eyes not catching her mistake. She spotted a young rabbit, looking as if it had only recently left its burrow for the first time, crouched near a group of burrows, nise quivering. Sorrelpaw dropped into a graceful hunter's crouch, lifting her fluffy white paws slowly and deliberately as she stalked the rabbit. When she was about a fox-length away she leapt, just as the rabbit sensed her and bolted. Her white claws snagged in the rabbit's fur and she dragged it back, killing it with a quick bite. She the sat up straight, triumpant, before kicking dirt and grass over her catch and continuing her search.

Walnutclaw turned and crept in the grass to watch Sorrelpaw as she hunted. Hmm....Nice paw action. He thought. His eyes never left her as she made her way towards the rabbit. He croached even lower to eye the rabbit. He was pleased when she easily caught it. She learns quickly and with some lessons will be a warrior to be feared. He thought proudly.

Sorrelpaw sniffed the air for long moment, before the fur on her throat began to rise. She looked up in a barren tree, a tall, skant being with bare branches. Crouched on one of these naked arms was a blackbird, ruffling its glossy black wings as it glared down at Sorrelpaw. The apprenticed hissed, running up to the tree. Maybe if she climbed it, she could reach the bird! Walnutclaw would be really proud of her then. She clawed her way up the tree, stopping every few minutes and wobbling precariously. When she reached the branch the blackbird was roosting on, the ebony-coloured bird took flight, cawing angrily. Sorrelpaw launched herself after it, toppled off of the branch, and landed with a dull thump in the grass. She scrambled to her paws, limbs throbbing. Her face burnt with embarrasment.

Walnutclaw blinked as he watched her. What in Starclan's name is she doing? He thought startled. What if she falls or hurts herself? He thought, and then realized that he was afraid for her!! It surprised him and he froze. Then the blackbird took off, and so did she. Well, she didn't exactly takeoff, she fell off. Walnutclaw felt a tremor shake his heart and before he knew it, he bounded over to her and nosed her quickly."Are you alright?[/i]He asked worriedly.

Sorrelpaw hied away from her mentor, tortoiseshell fur bristling in fury and embarrasment. "I'm fine!" she spat. "I nearly had it! It just slipped between my claws!" She glared at Walnutclaw resentfully for a moment before dipping her head and beginning to wash the ruffled white fur on her chest.

Walnutclaw blinked.Well, could you please wait till we have had a lesson on hunting birds! His tail whipped through the air as he stared at Sorrelpaw. He felt hurt that she didn't trust him to make sure she was alright. He dipped his head, his voice suddenly harsh. We have to go to camp.He turned and trotted away without looking at Sorrelpaw.

"Fine!" spat Sorrelpaw, her tail bristling so that it looked twice its usual size. Something about the tom made her feel like her fur was being rubbed the wrong way, but she also felt unhappy she seemed to have upset him. A surge of dislike ran through Sorrelpaw and as her mentor began to pad away she pushed roughly past him and marched on ahead, nose in the air. [ooc;] Ooh. xD

OOC; Isn't she supposed to love him at first?
Walnutclaw jumped when she shoved past hi m and let out a hiss of surprise. He gazed after her, trying to sort out his feelings. How was he supposed to tell her how he felt? It was wrong to love an apprentice but he couldn't change his heart.
