PROLOGUE
Lightning flashed across the night sky and rain started to fall. Clouds covered the full moon, casting an eerie shadow across the ground. The rain fell onto scorched wood, putting out small flames. Lightning flashed once more followed by thunder. Shadows slowly crept across the black ashes. Small lithe cats warily padded around the scarred grounds. Their eyes flickered in the night, and slowly they padded on. One cat separated himself from the others, and looked back across the ruins. As if on signal, more cats crept out from under the rubble. They looked around, their eyes full of shock.
Their home, or what was left of it, lay in ashes around their paws. It had been destroyed by their worst enemy, fire. A scarred tom jumped onto a piece of wood, scrambling to get hold on the wet surface. He turned to face the other cats. Worry flashed across their faces as lightning once more flashed across the sky.
“We must leave here, my friends. Our home is no more and our masters left us. We must go in search for new lands, and that only means the forest,” the tom growled. Gasps of shook rang out from the cats as they looked towards each other. They fluffed out their fur in fright and unsheathed their claws. The tom narrowed his eyes and slightly shivered from the rain.
“We have never ventured far out before. You’re sending us to our graves, Thor. We would die out there,” a cat snapped. Thor looked out, narrowed his eyes. A bracken colored tom stepped away from the rest. As he stood forward thunder boomed and lightning flashed. The cats hissed and crouched to the ground, glancing up at the sky.
“If we stayed here we would die, Alaz. Unless you have a better place we can go to?” Thor mused, barring his teeth. The tom just shook his head and backed up to his place. Golden eyes narrowed and Thor nodded.
“Then it is settled. We will head out tonight.” As the decision was made, murmurs broke out from the cats. Their eyes were filled with worry and they lashed their tails. But slowly, one by one, they stood up. Thor leaped off the wood and padded through the soot. Other cats followed, occasionally flicking their paws free of ash.
The dark forest loomed in front of the cats as they crawled out of the scarred grounds. Their eyes flickered, and many laid their ears back against their heads. A few even hissed. Thor glanced back at the cats, and flicked his tail. Taking a deep breath, the tom stepped into the forest. Almost immediately the thunder was blocked out from heavy brush. The ground underneath felt soft and he felt his paws sink down.
“Our new home…” he whispered to himself. With one last glance back, he stepped forward and was engulfed by the forest. A new destiny was set forward. The cats left their old home and entered their new one. It was time to leave the past, and enter a future. One that could be filled with danger…
