Brokensoul crept along the drop, his eyes open for anything. He breathed in the scent of rabbit and looked around wildly for it. Suddenly, he saw it scurry away from him and into a bush. It was then two things happened. First, Brokensoul looked up and saw Brightflame not but a few fox lengths away. Second, he saw an orange beast not too far away from Brightflame. His eyes narrowed and darkened. In a few quick steps, he began to creep toward Brightflame. He stood beside her and stared at the fox. It saw him. He saw it. His pelt tingled with fear.

Brightflame crept closer to Brokensoul, so that their sides touched. She did not talk, she did not want to agitate the fox. What should we do? wondered Brightflame in anxiety. Should we run? Should we attack? Should we creep away slowly? thoughts flashed quickly through her head. Many cats had been killed by foxes. She did not want to become one of them. The fox stared down at them. He opened his mouth and snarled. His sharp, white teeth gleamed in the afternoon sunlight. Brightflame flinched. She tried not to move. Pictures flashed through her mind of her and Brokensoul being killed by the beast. StarClan help us! Brightflame wailed inwardly.

Brokensoul's tabby pelt was raised and he barred his teeth. He unsheathed his white gleaming claw and hissed quietly. He stepped a few paces in front of Brightflame as if protecting her, which was what he planned to do. The stinging pain of the thorns that he had pushed in were gone. Nothing seemed to matter now except his life and the life of Brightflame and in his eyes, Brightflame's life mattered more. He snarled and spat on the ground. His eyes gleamed with anger and he looked back at Brightflame. "We will fight until it's dead,"he whispered and turned back to the fox.
Suddenly, he lept and landed next to the fox. He then grabbed on to the foxes orange fur with his teeth at the neck. He snarled. The fox growled and yelped in pain. He tossed his head back and forth but then grabbed on to Brokensoul's scruff, not too far away from his neck, and began to shake him like a dog with a toy. Brokensoul yowled and screetched in pain but the fox took no notice and threw the lump of fur against a rock and glared back at Brightflame.
Brokensoul could feel blood from his neck, trickling around him but he felt as though he couldn't move, he kept his eyes opened but could feel himself fading.

"Brokensoul!" screetched Brightflame. She wanted to run to his aid, but the fox had already pounced at her. She hissed as it bit her leg. She raked it's face with her claws. The fox snarled and flung his claws at her. Brightflame could feel her ear being torn. She yelped in pain. She leaped onto the fox's back, clawing out fur at the same time. She could see Brokensoul now. She stared into his eyes for a moment, before the fox bit her tail. Brightflame was shaken off the fox. Her face was pushed into the ground. She could feel the fox's breath, hot on her neck. Blood trickled down her back. She waited for the fox's final blow. She would be dead. She held her breath. Don't make me suffer. she thought in agony Kill me quickly. Just get it over with She waited.

Brokensoul fell unconscious soon after the fox pounced on Brightflame.
The place was dark and cold. The ground under his paws was hard and almost sticky but it was yet. A young tom's yellow gaze rested on a little tabby she-cat. She sat in the center of an alley where he had been born and raised. "Mother..."the tom's voice rang. The she-cat merely nodded her head and dashed out of the clearing. The tom tilted his head and looked behind him. There stood a large, evil looking tom. He backed off but it was like that evil cat walked right through him. "Friends!"he called and more cats gathered around him. "I am happy to say that my mate is now pregnant with kits," he yowled proudly and many cat yowled in approval. The tabby tom just stood there for a long moment before he blinked one time. That was it.
Brokensoul woke up where he had fallen asleep, just to see Brightflame fall and the fox dig his teeth into her back. He screeched in fury and stood. He unsheathed his claws and barred his fangs. His yellow gaze stared at Brightflame for the longest second and he gasped,"If I never come back, Brightflame, and if you can here me, I say these words before my mother's dead body that she may here me and my words. She told me to love. Real, true, love. Brightflame I love you!"
It was then, he sprang at the fox's side and there was such a force that they both went tumbling, toward the edge. Many times, Brokensoul's head hit the ground but he knew that he was leaving Brightflame safely behind him. Suddenly, he didn't not feel wait on him and he looked over the cliff, just to see the fox disappear over it.

Brightflame stood staring after them. She did not see them. She did not see them. Her lip quivered as she spoke, "Brokensoul?" she mewed. "Brokensoul?" she mewed again, this time barely even a whisper. She trudged forward, toward the edge of the cliff. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the tabby tom, staring over the drop. A smile broke accross Brightflame's face. She leaped forward, to press her muzzle into Brokensoul's shoulder. "You saved me!" mewed the orange she-cat. "Thank you." Brokensoul's last words echoed in her mind. I love you. Brightflame stepped back to gaze into his eyes. "I love you too." she whispered. She pressed her muzzle into his shoulder again, and closed her eyes, savouring the moment. The cold wind ruffled her fur, but she did not notice. Her heart raced. She could hear only her own purring, and her heart beat.

Wide, yellow eyes stared in disbelief as he saw the fox disappear over the cliff. He heard it bark a few times before silent came from the ravine's base. He gasped, breathing hard, for he had held his breath for the longest time. He blinked and few times but then turned to see Brightflame coming toward him.
Her voice was so soft. It reminded him so much of his mother's when she would sooth him at night when his father would get angry. Soon he felt her muzzle pressed into his fur, ever so gently. He licked the top of her head and tears began to drip down his cheeks, hitting the rocky ground. "Thank StarClan,"he murmured as he set his head atop of her's. "I won't ever leave you,"he mewed and closed his eyes to stop the tears from following on her beautiful fur.

Brightflame did not know what to say. She leaned on Brokensoul and gazed down over the drop. Pictures flashed through her mind of Brokensoul, tumbling over the cliff with the fox. Brightflame shook her head. She had thought that she had lost the tabby while Brokensoul and the fox had been rolling toward the cliff. Brightflame shuddered. No, Brokensoul had remained strong, and survived. She buried her muzzle into his fur again. She had been so worried. "Oh, Brokensoul," she whispered. Her heart still pounded loudly. She gazed up at the sun which was hiding behind some clouds. She watched as the clouds changed shape, joined together, and separated. They were sort of like cats, reflected Brightflame. Right now, she hoped that her and Brokensoul would be together forever.

It was like all the pain from his neck had been gone for all those long minutes. Like his mother had taken them away from him as he killed the fox but now all those pain returned. He closed his eyes even tighter when he felt the stinging from his wound. Other wounds were scratches and bruises from the tumble but he could feel his heart pounding his his neck.
But Brokensoul didn't want to leave Brightflame here. She had wounds that needed to be cared for too. "Brightflame,"he mewed softly and lovingly,"We have to get back to camp. Forget the prey. I'll send someone else to get it later but you are losing a lot of blood." He nuzzled her cheek and stared into her eyes. Those beautiful eyes he had loved since day one and it had been a very long day. The sun was about to set in the distance but he could feel himself growing weaker and weaker...

Brightflame gazed back at him. He had spoke truthfully. She was losing a lot of blood. She could feel blood seeping from one wound in particular on her shoulder. She sighed. This had been a hard day. But even with the attack of the fox, she did not want this day to end. This is the day, her and Brokensoul had spoken their minds. The truth had been released. Brightflame did not want this to end. Finally, she replied, "Yes, I agree. We should be getting back. Come on." She limped forward a few steps. Her shoulder really hurt now. But she did not want Brokensoul to worry. He had his own injuries to deal with. She tried not to limp, but as she took another step, she found that it was impossible. She sighed, then limped on.

Brokensoul watched her struggle to walk and felt concerned. If she couldn't get back, would he be able to carry her? Probably not but they were a long way from camp. Could he even make it? His one leg was bruised badly but the rest of him didn't hurt, except his head and his neck. Sighing softly, he padded up next to her with a heavy heart. He licked her ear and gently nuzzled her cheek. "We'll make it, love,"he mewed softly and smiled. He then padded forward with her at his side. He almost felt proud that he was with her but the pain that he had and more importantly that she had stopped him from prancing around and yowling, 'I have a mate!' He smiled at the thought and walked on.

Brightflame padded on. Her shoulder hurt, and her stomach growled. She wished that they had eaten something before. She gazed at Brokensoul. He understood her. And Brightflame was ever so grateful for that. No one had treated her with respect like Brokensoul was. Brightflame leaned against the tabby Warrior. Camp was a long way away. They may have to walk on all day. But she knew that whatever happened, they would get home. "Thank you again Brokensoul. For saving me, and.... everything else." she smiled at him, as she struggled over a fallen log that had bared their path.
